We did it! Our very first Balls to the Wall Comedy Show on November 14th was a hit, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick things off. The night was full of laughs, flying balls, and an energy that made us forget (almost) how cold it was—it just happened to fall on the coldest night of the year so far.

A Night to Remember

Here’s how it all went down:

A Brave Crowd: Despite the chill, the Nameless Saloon crowd bundled up, grabbed drinks, and got ready to make comedy history. People were swapping their drink tickets for red and green balls, gearing up to pelt their favorite (or not-so-favorite) comedians.

Hosts with the Most: Our hosts, ChadO and Zach Leboza, kept the energy high, the crowd engaged, and the balls flying.

Comedians Who Brought the Heat:

Tony Cruz had everyone cracking up when he encouraged a woman in the crowd to take her best shot. He danced and dodged like his life depended on it—it was pure comedy gold.

Josh Castro broke the ice by inviting the audience to “throw some shit at him.” It didn’t take long for the balls to start flying, and had everyone laughing as he hilariously reacted.

Jason Mott got some laughs and said he enjoyed the experience, and had a lot of fun.

Lee Cross brought a great set and barely got phased by flying balls

Jake Coulter was appreciative of the opportunity and said it was “awesome”

Charlie G pushed through despite admittedly getting rattle by audience members approaching aimed with balls.

Marshall Loether came from out of state, and wow’d us with a string of fuck-yeahs!

Nick Bermea closed the night out with a bang.

A Live Stream Learning Curve: We live-streamed the event on ATX Comedy Review’s YouTube channel—but unfortunately, the sound didn’t record. Big bummer, we know. But hey, first shows are all about working out the kinks, and we were focused on making sure the live audience had the time of their lives.

Captured Moments: Thankfully, I was able to grab some of the best moments on video, and we’ve got some soundless footage as a fun little keepsake.

What Made It Special?

The mix of comedy and audience participation created an atmosphere that was equal parts hilarious and unpredictable. Whether it was the laughter, the flying balls, or the comedians trying to dodge and deliver punchlines at the same time, it was an experience like no other.

Don’t Miss the Next One!

We’re just getting started, and next Thursday promises to be even better!

Comedians: If you want in on this wild, interactive comedy show, sign up now to secure your spot.

Audience: Grab your friends, your drinks, and your aim, and join us at Nameless Saloon. Throw a ball, throw some love, or just throw caution to the wind—it’s all part of the fun!

Come be part of Balls to the Wall and help us make comedy history, one laugh (and one throw) at a time. See you next Thursday! See Event Page for Details

If you find yourself on the vibrant Sixth Street in downtown Austin, don’t miss the iconic Velveeta Room comedy club, nestled at 521 E 6th St. For three decades, this long-running comedy club and bar have been a haven for local stand-up acts and open mic nights in an intimate setting.

During my visit to The Velveeta Room, I noticed this legendary comedy club proved to be more than just a venue; it was an intimate haven where laughter echoed through a packed house, creating an unforgettable evening. Upon arriving, I was immediately struck by the cozy, vintage ambiance that defines The Velveeta Room. The colorful walls, the intimate setting – it all contributed to an atmosphere that felt like a well-kept secret in the heart of Austin’s bustling entertainment district.

What caught me off guard, in the best possible way, was the sheer number of people packed into this seemingly small space. The intimacy of The Velveeta Room, with its vintage swank, transformed the night into an immersive experience, making every punchline hit just a bit harder. There’s an undeniable respect commanded by the Old Showbiz energy that rendered the atmosphere ethereal.

One can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia upon entering the building, almost as if the energy from previous performances lingers in the air. It’s this feeling that makes you wonder – maybe this place is haunted, not by ghosts, but by the echoes of countless tales that have reverberated within its walls.

As with any comedy night, there were moments that soared and others that stumbled. Yet, that unpredictability is what makes live comedy so intriguing. The diverse range of acts, from the uproarious sets to the ones that missed the mark, contributed to the authentic charm of The Velveeta Room.

In the end, my night at The Velveeta Room was more than a visit to support my husband; it became a personal comedy journey. It was a reminder that comedy, in its raw and unfiltered form, has the power to bring people together, creating moments that linger in the heart long after the laughter subsides.

Every Thursday night, The Velv plays host to live, uncensored stand-up comedy with different lineups every week, including their popular open mic sessions. This corner location, affectionately known as The Velv, has been a staple in the Austin comedy scene since 1988, when Ronnie, Michael Shelton, and Shannon Sedwick joined forces to bring a unique brand of laughter to Sixth Street.

The Velveeta Room has weathered the comedy landscape, and its enduring success speaks volumes about its commitment to fostering a space where comics can let loose both on and off the stage. It’s not just a club; it’s a cozy respite from the hustle and bustle of Dirty Sixth – a place built by and for comics.

The venue’s history, marked by its transformation from a topless bar known as The Embassy Room to The Velveeta Room in 1988, adds an extra layer of charm. Inspired by the Vegas lounge lizard character Ronnie Velveeta, created by comedian Kerry Awn, the club has retained an old-world charm that feels like a step back in time to the golden era of showbiz.

Esther’s Follies, born out of Esther’s Pool, was the precursor to The Velveeta Room, starting in 1977 and evolving into a vibrant comedy venue. The intimate setting, dimly lit stage, and the unique placement of bathrooms – all contribute to the vintage allure of The Velv. The shared bathrooms offer a glimpse into the shared space, with hairpins and pieces of wigs telling stories of frantic preparations for performances at Esther’s Follies.

The Velv is not just a venue; it’s a living, breathing archive of entertainment, embracing each visitor with its rich history and intimate charm.

For those looking to dive into Austin’s fastest open mic scene, The Velv offers a no-lag, no-drag experience. With a history rich in laughs and an intimate ambiance, The Velveeta Room stands as a testament to Austin’s reputation for funny business. Don’t miss the chance to be part of the comedy legacy – check out their open mic sign-up at https://www.thevelveetaroom.com/open-mic. Come see why it’s Austin’s fastest and most exciting open mic night!

For today’s aspiring comedians, making it onto the legendary stage of “Kill Tony” is a dream come true.

It’s a place where they can test their wit, humor, and stage presence.

But for ChadO, this dream took some synchronicity, patience, and 63 sign-ups to realize.

ChadO’s journey into the comedy scene is a testament to determination and the pursuit of one’s passion.

He was inspired to move to Austin, Texas, with the goal of conquering the comedy circuit.

With a relentless spirit, he committed to performing at 15 open mics a week, honing his craft and working his way up the comedy ladder.

Finally, the stars aligned, and ChadO received his bucket pull to “Kill Tony” #630 at Rogan’s Comedy Mothership. The episode was legendary, with guest panelists Sam Tallent and Adam Ray as Dr. Phil, and it has since been hailed by many as one of the best in the show’s history.

ChadO kicked off his set with some laughs on marriage material, setting the tone for a memorable performance. He nailed the timing, finishing his set just seconds before the infamous “Meow,” an indication of the conclusion of a comic’s time on the show.

Dr. Phil (Adam) connected with ChadO, and the two engaged in a hilarious rapport, even bumped fucking mics. The camaraderie and energy in the room were palpable.

The podcast’s host, Tony Hinchcliffe, known for his sharp wit and quick questions, delved into ChadO’s 24 years of marriage and the 63 sign-ups.

ChadO admitted that nerves got the best of him, and he couldn’t answer Tony’s questions as he would have liked.

But what sets “Kill Tony” apart is its vast audience reach, and even seasoned comedians can find themselves caught off guard by the show’s unique format.

At one point, Adam Ray gives this beautiful advice, “You got real and you weren’t trying– that I got very invested in.”

The funny thing is, later when we talked, ChadO didn’t think he did well on the interview. But Adam is right. It’s the moment ChadO set the writing aside, go vulnerable, and started being the Chad that I know.

ChadO’s realization that he had finally gotten pulled was beautifully understated.

He sent me a simple text, a picture of his tiny joke book, to share the good news.

It was a moment of sheer pride and accomplishment.

But the “Kill Tony” experience doesn’t stop at the taping.

After waiting for three damn weeks, ChadO’s episode finally aired.

ChadO’s podcast co-host, Zach Leboza, was one of the few who knew about ChadO’s experience.

They shared the moment, watching the episode together on ChadO’s phone, making the experience even more surreal, because they were both at yet another Kill Tony taping.

I’m really glad he had someone there with him as he watched the comments pouring in faster than they could read them, filled with a range of emotions, from love to hate, and everything in-between.

As the weeks went by, ChadO reflected on the experience on his podcast, acknowledging what went well and what he could improve.

He is filled with a sense of accomplishment, having achieved a goal that many comedians aspire to—landing on the top comedy podcast.

But the story doesn’t end there.

Adam Ray, one of the guest panelists, even shared videos of the episode as highlights, and the connection between them felt real.

The support and exposure from the “Kill Tony” experience were both thrilling and surreal.

ChadO’s journey in the world of comedy has been an exhilarating ride, with a little shock along the way, especially when I became the subject of some of the jokes. Nevertheless, it’s his journey, and it tells a story of tremendous dedication to studying and writing, stemming further back than his comedy career.

So, what’s next for ChadO?

With the experience of “Kill Tony” #630 under his belt, who knows what comedic heights he’ll reach next?

The journey continues, and one thing’s for sure: ChadO is making his mark in the world of comedy, and it’s an exciting ride for all those who follow his adventures.

Welcome to the electrifying world of stand-up comedy, where laughter is the ultimate currency! It’s an art that demands bravery and finesse to tickle funny bones. In this article, we’ll delve into various joke styles and the secrets to selecting the perfect one for your audience.

Picture yourself on stage, armed with witty jokes that leave your crowd in stitches. But hold on, dear aspiring comedians! Before you take that leap into the spotlight, let’s talk gear.

As a new comedian, having the right tools is essential for your comedic journey. Think of it as your comedic armor! A good microphone is your trusty sidekick, amplifying your voice and delivering punchlines with perfect clarity. And don’t forget the joke book – your treasure chest of hilarious ideas and witty observations. It’s your secret weapon to capturing and refining comedic brilliance.

So, brace yourself for this wild and wonderful adventure! With jokes that hit the mark and the right gear by your side, you’re ready to conquer the stand-up comedy stage. Get set to bring the house down with laughter, and let your comedic prowess shine like a dazzling star!

There are many different styles of jokes, and the right type for your audience will depend on the situation. Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a joke:

The age of your audience: Some jokes are more appropriate for adults than for children.

The culture of your audience: Some jokes may be offensive to people from certain cultures.

The occasion: Some jokes are better suited for certain occasions than others. For example, you probably wouldn’t tell a dirty joke at a funeral.

The mood of your audience: If your audience is feeling down, you might want to avoid telling jokes that are too dark or depressing.

Once you’ve considered these factors, you can start to narrow down your choices. Here are a few different styles of jokes to keep in mind:

Knock-knock jokes: These are simple jokes that rely on a pun or a surprise ending.

Riddles: These are puzzles that require the listener to figure out the answer.

One-liners: These are short jokes that are usually funny because of their wordplay or unexpected twist.

Shaggy dog stories: These are long, rambling stories that build up to a punchline that is often anticlimactic.

Parody jokes: These are jokes that make fun of other jokes, movies, TV shows, or other popular culture references.

Being a comedian is not just about being funny. It also requires a lot of hard work and dedication. One of the most important things that a comedian needs is the right gear and products. The right gear can help a comedian to deliver their jokes in a more effective way and can also help them to stay organized and prepared for their shows.

Laugh Lab Essentials: Gear Every Stand-Up Comic Should Have

Using Comedy T-Shirts as Icebreakers:

Before stepping onto the stage, a comedian must understand their audience’s preferences, interests, and sensitivities. While crafting jokes is essential for on-stage performances, comedians can also use humor to connect with people in everyday settings. One creative way to do this is by wearing a graphic t-shirt with a slogan like “Stand Up Comedy is my calling” while running errands, grocery shopping, or attending networking events. This fun icebreaker can spark conversations and connections off stage, allowing comedians to share their passion for comedy and forge meaningful relationships with the community and professionals alike.

The Featured Joke Book: Capturing Progress and Creativity:

The comedy prompts joke book holds a special place in a comedian’s toolkit. Designed with plenty of lines for jotting down ideas, observations, and punchlines, this joke book becomes a record of their progress and creative process. As comedians write jokes, experiment with delivery, and refine their material, the pages of the joke book bear witness to their growth as artists.

Moreover, the joke book includes thoughtful prompts to help comedians get started when inspiration seems elusive. From writing exercises to quirky questions, these prompts serve as fertile ground for cultivating fresh ideas and perspectives. Each page is an invitation to explore the depths of their comedic minds, capture fleeting moments of hilarity, and mold them into unforgettable punchlines.

Quality Audio Recording Anytime:

Embrace the power of timing and delivery with a cutting-edge microphone attachment for your phone. Refine your comedic skills anytime, anywhere, and leave your audience in stitches with perfectly timed punchlines.

With the microphone attachment, you can turn your daily commutes and downtime into valuable practice sessions. Experiment with intonation, pacing, and comedic pauses to create a performance that leaves a lasting impression on your audience. No more waiting for stage time – seize every moment to hone your craft and elevate your comedic prowess.

Embrace the Digital Stage for Global Reach and Recognition

In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial for comedians aiming to book shows and get discovered. A Slap Knee online profile provides a global reach, allowing comedians to connect with audiences beyond their immediate surroundings. With their comedy showcased 24/7 on web pages and social media channels, comedians can impress bookers and industry professionals at any time of the day, maximizing their chances of securing opportunities.

The accessibility and convenience of an online profile make it effortless for booking agents and event organizers to discover new talents. With just a few clicks, these professionals can access comedians’ videos, portfolios, upcoming show schedules, and contact information. Moreover, engaging with fans and industry insiders through social media platforms fosters a sense of community and loyalty, while simultaneously catching the attention of potential bookers and talent scouts.

An online profile enhances professional credibility, portraying comedians as serious and dedicated performers. Additionally, the online profile serves as a centralized hub for all promotional efforts, streamlining the process for bookers and fans to access essential information like showreels, tour dates, ticket sales, and press reviews.

The data and insights provided by online platforms are invaluable for comedians. These analytics offer valuable information about audience demographics, interests, and engagement patterns. Armed with this data, comedians can tailor their content, target specific markets, and make informed decisions to optimize their career growth and success in the competitive world of comedy. Embracing the digital realm allows comedians to let their comedic genius resonate with audiences worldwide and open doors to a world of opportunities.

Creating Your Own Projects:

Magix Software provides a creative outlet for comedians to explore. Beyond the stage, this software can be used to create videos, audio recordings, and even podcasts that showcase their comedic talents to a wider audience. By embracing technology, comedians can expand their reach and connect with like-minded individuals, growing their network and exposure in the comedy world, both virtually and in person.

During our lively conversation, we dove deep into Austin, Texas’ flourishing comedy scene, known for its vibrant humor and active comedy community.

Meet Mike Hudak: To kick things off, we introduced our co-host for the day, Mike Hudak. In a rather amusing twist, Mike’s promotion to co-host happened almost immediately upon his arrival. He graciously stepped in for Derek Temple, who had a previous hosting commitment that evening.

The Comedy Challenge in Austin: Mike and ChadO started by discussing the various comedy shows in Austin, with a focus on the unique challenge mics that are an integral part of the city’s comedy landscape. These challenge mics offer comedians a platform to think on their feet and stay in the moment, setting Austin apart from smaller towns.

Comedy Hosting and Mic Management: We shared our experiences in managing a comedy show featuring a remarkable 35 comedians. This led to an insightful discussion about the intricacies and challenges of overseeing such large open mic events. Mike and ChadO shared valuable insights into hosting these shows while ensuring the audience remains engaged.

The Influx of New Talent: We celebrated the growing influx of fresh comedic talent in Austin. The city has become a magnet for comedians from all corners of the country who are eager to advance their careers. The addition of new voices undeniably enriches Austin’s comedy scene.

Showcasing Local Comedians: Our conversation underscored the importance of featuring local comedians at Austin’s comedy events. This practice allows comedians to identify what worked and what didn’t, leading to personal growth and joke refinement.

Working on Comedy Sets: We both emphasized the value of not feeling pressured to create new material for every open mic. Instead, we encouraged comedians to focus on refining and developing their existing material over time.

The Anderson Mill Pub Experience: Mike highlighted the significance of performing at Anderson Mill Pub, a room known for its honest and attentive audience. It’s a place where patrons often enjoy a drink or two, making it an ideal setting for gaining confidence and enhancing audience interaction skills.

Headshots and Press Kits: We recommended that comedians invest in professional headshots and create press kits to boost their visibility and booking opportunities.

Seeking Sponsors: In a humorous twist, Mike shared his thoughts on comedians seeking sponsorships to ease their financial burden. He even dreamt of securing a sponsorship deal with a ramen company. Who knows, it might become a reality!

The Evolution of Smoking: We had a lighthearted conversation about the evolving culture of smoking, including the absurdities of vaping habits and even pre-tested e-cigarettes from China.

Mike’s Social Media: Mike encouraged our listeners to connect with him on Facebook and Instagram (@heyitsmikehudak).

This episode provides a valuable glimpse into Austin’s comedy scene and is a must-listen for both seasoned comedians and newcomers.
